Abigail Mosquera
Abigail Mosquera, born in Chicago and of Ecuadorian and Mexican descent, began dancing flamenco at the age of five through the after-school program at Inter-American Magnet School. She later continued her training at Christine Belpedio’s School of Dance under the direction of Julia Hinojosa and Abigail Ventura.
In 2017, Abigail joined the Ensemble Español Youth Company, where she trained under Julia Hinojosa, José Torres, Mónica Saucedo, and Crystal Ruiz. Throughout her journey, she has studied with distinguished artists including Paloma Gómez, Carmela Greco, José Barrios, Niño de los Reyes, Carlos Rodríguez, Isaac Tovar, La Lupi, Mercedes Ruiz, and many others.
In 2018, Abigail received the Rising Star Honor Roll for Dance from the City of Chicago and was awarded the Ballet Hispánico Nuestro Futuro Scholarship, which allowed her to continue her studies in New York with José Moreno, Nélida Tirado, and Alfonso Cid. In 2019, she was awarded a scholarship by Carmela Greco to study flamenco in Cádiz, Spain.
Abigail was promoted to Apprentice with Ensemble Español in 2020 and Company Dancer in 2021. As a company member, she has performed in works including Ben Amor by Dame Libby Komaiko and Dualia by Carlos Rodríguez and Ángel Rojas. She also performed the solo Por el Barrio by José Barrios at Navy Pier’s Chicago Live.
In 2023, Abigail attended Carmela Greco’s VIII Seminario de Flamenco y Danza Española in Spain, where she trained with Carmela Greco, Lola Greco, Carmen Ledesma, La Chiqui de Jerez, Jesús Fernández, Juan Navarro, Claudia Cruz, María José Franco, Marta Ortiz, and Torombo.
In addition to her work as a dancer, Abigail is a third-grade teacher with Chicago Public Schools and has taught dance at Inter-American Magnet School and within the Ensemble Español Youth Company.
